It seems to me that it would be better to imagine the "extra" dimensions not as curled up, but as receeding into a distance which we do not yet know how to measure. Thereby it seems that it is futile to try to find the extra dimensions by the method described here. In analogy, I might be in Minneapolis, trying to get a good look at Chicago. I know that Chicago is a certain size and distance, so I know what angle it should subtend. Now if I put two screens together in such a way as to look toward Chicago and investigate the space between the screens, which I know to be just the size Chicago would inhabit seen from that distance, can I then detect any information about what Chicago is doing? Evidently not.

The "extra" dimensions are not curled up conveniently so that they can be confined within two masses any more that information from Chicago can be confined within the space between two screens. Chicago receeds into the distance between the screens. The "extra" dimensions receed into the distance between the masses. People in Chicago are not affected by the fact that it seems small to me from Minneapolis. Events in the "extra" dimensions are not affected by the fact that we imagine them to be curled up into tiny spaces.

I am emphasising the lie of "extra" by putting it in quotations because I think that is the source of the difficulty in our reasoning. The dimensions are primary, not extra. It is our own viewing structure that is limited, curled up, in our perception of the Universe as strictly founded in a 3+1 structure. It is not. The universe is unlimited. We, as beings, are necessarily limited.

If we want to know more about the structure of the universe, we have to make our eyes very, very wide.

Thanks,

RTH
