Particles are really three dimensional and they have mass, but they represent and act as one dimensional points because they are smaller than the length of strings or the distance between points. And below a certain weight they act massless. So we have the slightly confusing challenge of dealing with something that is not really what it is. If there is any distance between points, and any mass to space itself, which there is, then any size below that distance is still considered one dimensional and any weight below that weight is considered massless.
