I understand "compact", I understand "locally compact",
I do not understand "more globally compact".

The compactification spaces are simply compact
manifolds. I don't need to invoke the machinery of
topology in order to somehow forge a compact space
from a noncompact one, I simply start with a compact
manifold. Global properties are used, but for nearly
all cases of interest, I need a differentiable
structure. Coordinate patches are used insofar as
they are endemic to the proper definition of a smooth
manifold.
