does this then mean that string theorists don't worry
about having a topological cover for the compactified
dimensions ? for example, if a compactified dimension
is parametrized by a single real variable, you would
have to chop off part of the dimension to
compactify it, it seems. sounds like we're getting
into the nasty world of coordinate patches.
