Compactification in physics is pretty loosely used.
It's generally taken to mean that you replace a
noncompact manifold with a compact one. However,
one usually doesn't need something as extravagant
as the exact one-point compactification of a space
(though for circles from lines or spheres from R^n it
works out that way). Physics people usually have a
metric, so it's just a matter of replacing the metric
for a noncompact space with the metric for a compact
one.
