as it relates to string theory, when we speak of
a dimension, are we talking about a topological
dimension ?

and is a compactification basically just making
a non-closed and bounded set compact ? i.e.
defining a collection of open sets that "covers"
a dimension that is parametrized by a single
real variable ?
