remember that time and space got tied together when einstein advanced the two postulates of SR - the constancy of the speed of light in vacuum, and the equivalence of inertial observers. if this is to be true, you have to have more than just space issues as in your question. you have to admit the possibility of two events such that a material body cannot reach one from the other because it would violate the first postulate of SR, the postulate on velocity of light. since velocity involves time and space, and in SR is kept constant, you have to manipulate both time and space to keep c = constant. after 1905, space and time had to become spacetime and you can't separate them again. this in turn lead to the problem with newtonian action-at-a-distance gravitation and to GR.
