in regard to the previous question about why string theory is stable in 11 dimensions and then compactifies a number of them, i would like to ask a reverse question - how does string theory encompass quantum mechanics which is formulated in an infinite dimensional hilbert space ? it seems that a transfinite cardinality would not be isomorphic to a set of order 11. how *do* you map an L-2 metric space of infinite dimension into a set with 11 dimensions only ?
