Einstein's theory of general relativity says that gravity is a bending of spacetime caused by the presense of mass or energy. Objects travel in "straight" lines, but if spacetime itself is curved, they certainly don't look straight. It isn't so much a case of what gravity does as a case of what gravity is. Greene's book discussed in one of the other forums presents a really good non-mathematical discussion of gravity, and there are a number of other sources in most major chain book stores. You'll find the information fascinating, but it's longer than anyone can probably post here. Does anyone else know a good link they can post here to help?
