Most theories picture strings as closed loops. Think rubber bands if you want a mental picture. Gravity does not cause string tension. In fact, gravity is the result of large numbers of strings vibrating in a common fashion. Strings have energy, but what they're made of is anybody's guess. In the forum you'll frequently see it referred to as "stuff".
