The information about compactifying the 22 extra dimensions of bosonic string theory should be found either somewhere on this site or in Greene's book. The answer is really too long a story for the forum. As for the "disappearance" of 16 extra dimensions, there is a way (and not an easy one to explain) of trading extra dimensions in a theory for extra fermions. The rule is roughly that one can get rid of one extra dimension for one complex fermion. Note that I am NOT, REPEAT NOT saying that fermions are the same as extra dimensions! There is a very precise mathematical context in which one can construct viable theories with the swapping above. Unfortunately, this story is a tad technical. phobos
